XAT Exam Pattern – Marking Scheme, Duration, Number of Questions

XAT  Exam Pattern used to be a traditional pen and pencil exam paper. However, since XAT 2018, it is conducted in online mode only. This change is new, hence the applicants must be well revised with the XAT paper pattern and should look for the new marking scheme, question distribution and ratio of the objective and subjective question. The exam is still divided into 2 parts. Part 1 is of Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Ability and Data interpretation and Decision making. Also, the exam has 70 objective type of questions. Another 2nd part will be of Essay writing and General knowledge with a mix of both subjective and objective type of question. The number of questions is not the same, it keeps on changing all the time every year. The exam is of 3 hours and 35 minutes. also, candidates must keep in mind that speculation will not work in this exam as there is XAT negative marking. In this article, we have tried to give a justified insight of the XAT pattern so that you can plan your syllabus well.

Time limit and Topics in XAT Exam

The applicant has 170 minutes to complete the paper 1 that has objective questions of reasoning, quantitative ability, Data Interpretation and decision making. Followed by a 5 minutes break and then they resume with the second paper. The general syllabus for these sections are as follow:

  • Decision making: For this candidate must have a sound knowledge of Arithmetic, Analytical Reasoning and Situational analysis. These questions are basically situations in which you need to interpret the analysis logically and provide 1 solution.
  • Verbal and Logical Ability: It has sentence correction, para jumble, complete test. This test is to evaluate the analogy of based on vocabulary and grammar.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: Arithmetic, Algebra and Data Interpretation. The questions in the Quants are based on normal straight calculus. Which can be solved with these operations.
  • General Knowledge: This part has static GK and current affairs
  • Essay writing: This test is to check how well the candidate can observe and interpret. The candidate needs to write an essay on the given topics.

Marking scheme for XAT Exam 2019

In XAT Exam almost all the question has equal marks that is 1. And on every wrong attempt, the deduction is 0.25 that ¼ of the marks of the question. Beside that the applicant cannot leave more than 12 questions unattempted. If they do so the deduction will be 0.5 marks that are ½ of the question weight. However, on leaving the exactly 12 questions the deduction it would be as same. As it was earlier that is 0.25 marks on the wrong attempt.

XAT Admit Card

Those candidates who have submitted the form and are eligible for the exam. For those applicants, the XAT admit card shall be available from the 3rd week of December 2018. It is advised to the applicant to download the admit card as soon as they can. And look for the test centre and availability of the transport on the date of the exam.
