As said before, the official UPSC CDS Notification 2019 is not declared yet. So, we don’t have the official vacancies available with us. However, the vacancies in the previous year were 414. UPSC CDS Eligibility

Let us take a look at the UPSC CDS Eligibility. You need to fulfil certain criteria to apply for UPSC CDS  2019 . The details are given below:

UPSC CDS Age Limit

Let us start by taking a look at the UPSC CDS age limit. There are special requirements for age and marital eligibility for different posts. As you know, the CDS is used to recruit candidates for Indian Military Academy (IMA) in Dehradun, Air Force Academy (Dundigul) and Indian Naval Academy (Ezhimala) as well as the Officer’s Training Academy. (i) For IMA-Unmarried male candidates aged 20 to 24 years as on 01st January 2019, i.e.born not earlier than 02nd January 1995 and not later than 01st January 2000 only are eligible

(ii) For Indian Naval Academy-Unmarried male candidates 20 to 24 years as on 01st January 2019, i.e.born not earlier than 02nd January 1995 and not later than 01st January 2000 only are eligible

(iii) For Air Force Academy – 20 to 24 years as on 01st January 2019 i.e. born not earlier than 02nd January 1995 and not later than 01st January 1999 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 years i.e. born not earlier than 02nd January 1993 and not later than 01st January 1999) only are eligible

(iv) For Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Course for men) Male candidates (married or unmarried) born not earlier than 02nd January 1994 and not later than 01st January 2000 only are eligible

(v) For Officers’ Training Academy -(SSC Women Non-Technical Course) Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible; they should have been born not earlier than 02nd January 1994 and not later than 01st January 2000

UPSC CDS Educational Requirements

You also need to fulfil certain educational requirements for UPSC CDS 2019. Different institutes have different requirements. The details are given below:

  1. i) For Indian Military Academy/Officers’ Training Academy:You must have a Degree in any subject from a recognized university or equivalent
  2. ii) For Indian Naval Academy: You must have a Degree in Engineering from a recognised University/Institution

iii) For Air Force Academy: You must Degree in any subject of a recognized University with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or Bachelor of Engineering degree

Important things to note:

  • Graduates with the first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force are to submit proof of graduation provisional certificate on the date of commencement of the SSB interview at the SSB.
  • For CDS exam, applicants can be from any stream but if you are applying for Air Force and Navy, candidates should have studied physics and maths up to Class 12.
  • Candidates who are studying in the final year degree course and have yet to pass the final year degree examination can also apply but they will be required to subject proof of passing the during the SSB interview.
  • If you are an Air Force candidate and you get suspended from Flying Training for failure to learn flying, they would be absorbed in the Navigation Branch of the IAF. This will be subject to availability of vacancies and fulfilling the requirements as laid down by the UPSC (including 60% in graduation).

UPSC CDS Physical Eligibility

You need to fulfil certain physical standards before you fill in the online application for UPSC CDS 2019. The details are given below:

  • Minimum acceptable height for male candidates is 157.5 cms (157 for Navy and 162.5 cms for Air Force).
  • For females candidates, the minimum acceptable height is 152 cms.
  • For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North Eastern regions of India, Garhwal and Kumaon, minimum acceptable height will be 152.5 cms.
  • For candidates from Lakshadweep, the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms.
  • The above concessions are not applicable for Navy and Air Force
  • For individuals with heavy bones and broad build as well as individuals with thin but otherwise healthy, this limit may be further relaxed to some extent on merit. Please refer the height weight chart released by UPSC for exact details.

UPSC CDS 2019 – Selection Process

Let us first understand the Selection Procedure, before we move towards learning about the UPSC CDS syllabus. Well, the UPSC CDS Selection Process involves the following stages:

  1. Written Exam
  2.  Interview/ Intelligence Test/ Personality Test, also known as just SSB interviews.
  3. Document Verification
  4. Medical Examination

Stage 1: Written Examination:  The first stage of the exam is the written exam. The written exam is an objective type paper. If you are applying for the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy or the Indian Air Force Academy, then you would have to appear for three papers – GK, English and Maths.

On the other hand, if you are applying for Officers Training Academy (OTA), then you would only have to appear for GK and English. The maximum marks for each paper are 100 marks each and the duration for each paper is 2 hours. This means that a candidate for IMA would have to answers questions of 300 marks in 6 marks in total. On the other hand, if you are applying for OTA, you would have to answer questions worth 200 marks in 4 hours.

Stage 2: Personal Interview/ Personality Test: After you pass the written test, you would have to appear for the SSB interviews.  There are two stages in this round-Stage I and Stage II. Only those candidates who clear the stage I would be allowed to appear for Stage II.

Stage I comprises of two tests. The first one is called Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and the second one is called Picture Perception and Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates would be selected for Stage II on their overall performance in both OIR test and the PP&DT.

Stage II comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officers Tasks, Psychology Tests and the conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

Stage 3: Document Verification: After you have passed both the Written and the Personality Tests, you would have to go through document verification. You need to ensure that all your documents are in order.

Stage 4: Medical Examination: The last stage of the process is the Medical Examination. You would be tested by a medical board. Female candidates would be tested by a board which would have a female doctor and a gynaecologist.

UPSC CDS 2019 – Filling Up the Online Application Form

Filling up the UPSC CDS Form can only be done online. The process of filling up the UPSC CDS Online Form is really simple. You just need to go through the following steps:

UPSC CDS 2019 – Syllabus

Let us now take a detailed look at the UPSC CDS exam syllabus. As said before, the candidates appearing for OTA would have to answer questions on English and GK and the candidates appearing for the IMA, AFA and INA would have the answer questions on mathematics in addition to English and GK. The question paper will be designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English and workmanlike use of words.

UPSC CDS Syllabus for GENERAL KNOWLEDGE (Code No. 02)

General Knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of nature which candidate should be able to answer without special study.



Number System—Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental operations, addition, substraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, Decimal fractions. Unitary method, time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.
Elementary Number Theory—Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9 and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem. H.C.F. and L.C.M. Euclidean algorithm. Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use of logarithmic tables.

UPSC CDS Training Stipend

All the candidates who get commissioned through CDS exam will get stipend during the training days. You will get 21000 as fixed Stipend which includes 15,600/- as pay in Pay Band plus Grade Pay of 5,400/- for the entire duration of training.
