National Eligibility Test (NET) also called UGC NET or CBSE NET is being conducted from 2018 once a year which used to happen twice in a year. UGC NET 2018 is an eligibility test for college and university level lectureship and also for the award of Junior Research Fellowship. On behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts NET once a year.
The candidates who qualify for the award of Junior Research Fellowship are eligible to pursue research in the subject of their post-graduation or in a related subject and are also eligible for Assistant Professor.

Eligibility Criteria for CBSE NET Exam
- The candidates from General category who secure a minimum of 55% in their Master’s and candidates from SC/ST/OBC/PWP who secure a minimum of 50% are eligible to attempt the National Eligibility Test (NET)
- Those who are appearing for their final exams or waiting for their final results are also eligible.
- For PhD candidates who have completed their Master’s (regardless of their result) on September 19, 1991, will be eligible for a 5 percent relaxation of marks on the aggregate.

Registration and Application form
The notification with regards to the NET exam was released in the month of February. This year the exam is being conducted on July 8th. The interested candidates for NET should fill out the application through online mode (Application closed for the year 2018). The procedure of application for NET is as follows
- Visit the Website https://cbsenet.nic.in/CMS/Public/View.aspx?page=79
- Fill out the application form which includes the candidate’s personal details along with the preference for their UGC exam centres, the subject they specialize in as well as what they want to opt for (either Assistant Professor or JRFandAssistant Professor). After filling out educational qualifications and other details, a password for the account has to be created and also security PIN has to be entered.
- Upload scanned photograph and signature
The size and dimensions of photo image are as mentioned below:

Exam Pattern
The exam pattern with respect to current year has been changed. Instead of three papers, the exam has been reduced to two papers.
The Paper – I is General Paper on Teaching and Research aptitude which includes Reasoning ability, Comprehension reading, mental ability, General awareness etc. Paper- I consist of 50 questions which carry 2 marks each. All questions are compulsory. The duration is one hour.
Paper- II is an elective which we can choose in correspondence to our Master’s. It consists of 100 multiple choice questions, 2 marks each. The duration of paper- II is 2 hours. There is no negative marking in this eligibility test.
Important points to remember:
- National Eligibility Exam is conducted in Offline mode only and OMR sheet will be used to mark the questions.
- There is no Negative Marking scheme in the NET exam as per CBSE
- Only Objective type questions will be present in the UGC NET 2018
- Paper – I has a duration of 1 hour wheres Paper – II will be conducted in 2 hours
- Both English and Hindi medium are allowed. Student has to choose the language while filling the application form.
Exam Qualification and Cutoff for NET Exam
The cut -off marks for general category is 40 marks of 40% in Paper- I as well as in Paper- II and for the reserved category the cut off is 35 marks or 35% in Paper – I as well as in Paper- II
The candidates who have cleared the eligibility test with respect to the criteria mentioned above will become a part of the merit list prepared by the board. The merit list is prepared using the aggregate marks of all the papers secured by such candidates.
From that merit list, only 6% will be declared NET qualified for Assistant Professor. Separate merit list will be prepared for qualifying for Junior Research Fellowship with the help of the formula below
