### Solving ‘Chess’ Questions

Example 1: In a chess tournament, there are 6 players who would play each other only once. What is the number of matches that would be played in the tournament?

a)12

b)15

The trick for solving: You don’t have to use complicated probability calculations here. All you need to do is look at the number of players (6 in this case) and then start adding the numbers that follow it in the decreasing order till 1. For example, in this case, you would need to add the numbers like this:

5+4+3+2+1=15

The correct answer is the option (b)-15.

Similarly, if the number of players was 7, we would have added like this: 6+5+4+3+2+1=21.

### Solving ‘Group and Group Leader’ Questions

Question: A team of 1200 students and teachers are travelling together. For every 15 students, there is one teacher. So, how many teachers are in the group.

Options:

a) 70

b) 75

c) 80

d) 85

The trick for solving: A lot of candidates would make the mistake of dividing 1200 by 15, to arrive at the number of groups. However, according to the question, a group is not only made by 15 students but it also has a teacher. So, the total number of members in a group is 16. We must divide 1200 by 16, and not 15.

The correct answer would be Option(b)-75

### Solving ‘Age’ Questions

Question: A father is now three times as old as his son. 5 years ago, he was four times as old as his son. What is the age of the son now?

a) 20

b) 12

c) 15

d) 18

The trick for solving: The best way to do is by option elimination. You can do it by formula, but that would take a fair amount of time. On top of that, the chances of getting it wrong are high as well. Therefore, the best way is to eliminate the wrong answers.

So, what is the first option that you should take? You should always start with the largest number and not the first option. The largest number here is 20.

If son’s age is 20 now, fathers age is 60

5 years ago, the son was 15 years of age and the father was 55. As clearly seen, this is wrong.

Next, you should not take the number that immediately follows the largest number,i.e. 18. You should take the number that follows 18, i.e. 15.

If son’s age is 15 now, fathers age is 45.

5 years ago, the son was 10 and the father was 40. This is the right answer.

Therefore, the right answer is the Option (c)-15.
