NATA Exam Pattern 2019 – Marking scheme for NATA and Question paper Pattern


NATA exam pattern is a blend of online and offline mode. The MCQ Part A is taken online in CBT form the Part B(drawing test) is taken offline. The paper is of three hours and the two parts are of 1.5 hours each.

The Council of Architecture (COA) conducts an all India entrance exam- NATA exam for the admission into B.Arch programme for admissions in the NATA 2019 participating institutes.

The National Aptitude Test in Architecture, the national level examination tests the aptitude of applicants for areas like drawing and observation skills, sense of proportion, aesthetic sensitivity and critical thinking, qualities that have been acquired over a long period of time and are related to Architecture. NATA for B.Arch exam is prescribed by the Council of Architecture as a compulsory criterion for taking admission to any Architectural College or course in India.

NATA 2019 is the combination of both the online and offline test for the admission to the undergraduate degree in architecture. The time period of both the part of the exam is the same. The two-part carries 1.5 hours each.

NATA Exam Pattern 2019

NATA exam pattern provides candidate the knowledge to understand the NATA question paper pattern and NATA marks for each question. The NATA Pattern is for the year 2019 is given below:


  • It is the main exam taken for pursuing the architecture course in India.
  • Duration of paper is 3 hours.
  • The NATA exam has two major parts – Online mode and Offline mode.

Questions and Marking Scheme:

  • It will have a total of 62 questions in both the parts.
  • 20 for mathematics
  • 40 for general aptitude
  • 2 for drawing test.

Thus making it 62 (20+40+2).

The questions in the first part are of objective nature (MCQ) and each question carries equal weight of marks. The second part is evaluated by different teachers and marks are given by examining the review of each.

There is no negative marking in NATA. The incorrect choices would lead to negative results in the tiebreaker round. The NATA qualifying mark decides the merit of the NATA exam. The 2018 NATA qualifying marks are 80/200.

What is Tie-break in NATA?

Tie-break is the process of NATA admission authorities to decide the procedure of admission. The case scenario of two candidates scoring the similar marks in the entrance exam result.

Tie-Break rules in NATA Exam:

The candidate with the below-mentioned points is chosen over the other candidate.

  • Maths section marks should be more.
  • The incorrect choices in mathematics sections should be less.
  • Aptitude test section overall marks should be more.
  • No. of wrong answers in the aptitude section should be less.
  • Candidate’s age (Date of Birth) consideration.

NATA Marking Scheme – NATA Exam pattern

Mathematics & General Aptitude Test:

  • Single option marked as a choice will be correct.
  • The first 90 minutes of NATA 2019entrance exam, candidates will have to answer the questions from the Maths and the general aptitude test.
  • Every correct choice will yield 2 (two) marks
  • There is no negative marking: the wrong answer leads to a negative impact during tie-breaking.

Drawing Test:

Given below are the points on which the drawing test scores are marked:

  • Ability to sketch a given object proportionately and providing the same in a visually appealing manner.
  • Visualising, drawing the effects of light on the object, and shadows cast on surroundings.
  • The sense of perspective drawing.
  • Composing & combining given three-dimensional elements to form a building/structural form.
  • Creating interesting two-dimensional compositions using given shapes/forms.
  • Creation of visual harmony using colors in given composition.
  • Understanding of proportions and scale.
  • Drawing the pencil sketch of day to day experiences.
