Kirori Mal College of Delhi University – Setting bars too high


Not just any other institution corralled under the purview of Delhi University, Kirori Mal is a college that literally resounds with fame and success since it’s inception in the year 1954. Clamped in the North Campus of Delhi University, the college offers quality education in science, arts and commerce. The students are popularly known as Kirorians and they’re conditioned to excel in a plethora of extracurricular activities like theatre, music and art purveyed by the college. In 2016, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rated the college with a CGPA of 3.54 (A+) which is third highest among all DU institutions. 1. Sports and Activities

The college supplies sports facilities for hockey, cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, basketball, athletics, boxing and chess. Kirori Mal College has a bright and astronomical history in sports. It holds the record for bagging five first positions in a single year (including three major games) in Delhi University Inter-College tournaments. The institution was also awarded the prestigious Vice-Chancellor’s Trophy for being the best All Round College. Year after year, it has sent first-rate players to Delhi University, Delhi State and Junior India teams in several games. Students who wish to participate in any of these sports/games enlist with Dr Pramod C. Sharma, Teacher-in-Charge, Department of Physical Education, at the beginning of the academic session. The department is well furnished with a sports ground developed by none other than the Commonwealth Games 2010 Organising Committee, complete with a Facility Block which is a great boon to all sports students. This includes a standard area for indoor activities such as Chess, Table Tennis, etc.

2.Extracurricular Activities

Kirori Mal College conducts myriad activities in drama, debate, music, fine arts, photography, dance and film. Notable among them is “Players”, the college drama society. The members of drama society receive special training in theatre arts and it generally puts up four productions. The KMC Dramatics Society flourished under teacher Prof. Frank Thakurdas and was revived in 1981 by the present head Keval Arora who was also one of its past Presidents.

3. Fests and Festivities

Renaissance is the annual fest of Kirori Mal College and is famous for being one of the best in North Campus. The annual fests for the dramatics and music societies also attract hordes of students. The Players or the dramatics society stages it plays in public, outside the premises of the college where both students and non-students commingle to watch the society’s annual stage productions. The Players also has an active street play wing and holds its own non-competitive fest, ‘Sar-e-Aam’ in the college. The annual fest of Music Society, ‘Surmanjari’ is also famous for its blast of creativity and talent display. KMC is also the only college to conduct an annual fest for its gender forum, Parivartan called ‘Nazariya’ which was graced by a performance by the contemporary theatre artist Maya Rao.

4. Campus and Infrastructure

Apart from the festivities, the college campus has also been made self-sufficient with a hostel, auditorium, library and cafe amply tucked in the ambit. The hostel provides space to approximately 170 students in its 89 rooms that are allocated on merit basis. The N.S. Pradhan Memorial Library is one of the most extensive libraries of Delhi University that is fully computerised with 1.5 lakh books and a capacity to accommodate 350 students. The college auditorium has a glorious history. It was the launching pad of some eminent artists like Amitabh Bachchan, Satish Kaushik, etc.

5. Alumni

Not only this, Kirori Mal College has large alumni to boast about. Some of them are Amitabh Bachchan, Shakti Kapoor, Sushant Singh, Ali Abbas Zafar, Kabir Khan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sanam Puri, Ravi Baswani, Satish Kaushik, etc.
