Hansraj College – The Jewel of Delhi University


Hansraj College, another jewel institution clamped in the North Campus of Delhi University, offers a wide choice of studies in science, commerce and liberal arts. The institution joined the exclusive list of esoteric colleges that are given Grade A+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a CGPA of 3.62. It is also the first college of Delhi University and the first Central University college to hoist a Monumental National Flag in its premises. The flag hoisting was planned on 25th January 2017 by Flag Foundation of India, a prominent non-profit organisation.

Originally, the college was the vision of D.A.V. College Managing Committee that laid the foundation of Hansraj on 26th July 1948. The institution was erected in the memory of the eminent Indian educator and nationalist, Mahatma Hansraj. It was only in the year 1978 that the college became co-educational and opened its gates for both boys and girls. Prior to that, for about 30 intervening years, Hansraj endorsed education only for men.

In the realm of science, it is important to note that HRC is recognised as an excellent choice, second only to St. Stephen’s College. Not only this, for pursuing commerce, Hansraj is considered as the second best college after Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). In addition to that, Hansraj College is one of the largest institutions of D.A.V. group which has over 700 institutions under its control. Populated by nearly 5000 students, Hansraj is undeniably one of the largest constituent colleges of Delhi University as well. For years on end, HRC has also managed to carve a niche for itself among the Top-10 colleges of India for all the three disciplines that it offers.

While celebrating it’s 69th Foundation Day, Naveen Jindal, a distinguished industrialist and alumnus of the college bestowed the honour on his alma mater to become the first college to hoist the National Flag in its campus. Subsequently, the flag that was hoisted happens to be the second Monumental Flagpole in Delhi after the one that is situated in Central Park, Connaught Place.

Hansraj College has churned out scores of notable alumni who went on to obtain humungous fame in their respective fields of expertise, both nationally and internationally. Shahrukh Khan tops the list as he is popularly known as ‘King Khan’ of Bollywood and garnered immeasurable fame and success in his life after graduating from the college. Other distinguished alumni are Aarti Bajaj, Abhinav Kashyap, Aditya Jha, Ajay Maken, Naveen Jindal, Gopal Subramaniam, etc. The list alone speaks volumes about the greatness of the college.

Hansraj College conducts its admission process as per the rules established by the University of Delhi. It admits students through the method of cut off lists that are released on fixed intervals. However, admissions on merit base are only applicable for undergraduate courses. Equivalent to its puissant reputation, the cut-offs of Hansraj are also sky high and leave students fidgeting in awe of it.
