Common Law Admission Test, popular by the acronym CLAT, is a national level joint entrance exam conducted tentatively every May in various centres across the country as a compulsory test for admission to 19 National Law Universities for the integrated undergraduate and postgraduate programs in law with its score being used by private colleges and PSUs. This competitive standardized test is conducted by one of the National Law Universities based tentatively on a policy of rotation. This computer-based standardized test spanning 2 hours aims at evaluating the candidates’ Logical Reasoning, Legal Aptitude, English, Elementary Mathematics, and General Knowledge.

Eligibility Requirements
The candidate must meet the following conditions to be eligible to write the exam :
(I) For Undergraduate Programs
- The candidate must have passed 12th grade with a minimum of 45% aggregate score. The minimum score required for the candidates belonging to SC/ST is reduced to 40%. Candidates appearing for the exam in 2019 can also apply.
- No specific age limits are defined.
(II) For Postgraduate Programs
- The candidate must have passed LL.B./Integrated LL.B./any equivalent exam with a minimum of 55%. The minimum score required for the candidates belonging to SC/ST categories is reduced to 50%. Candidates appearing for the respective final year exam in 2019 Rae also eligible to apply.
- No specific age limits are defined.
Application Procedure
Documents required
- Your recent passport size photo with a maximum of 100KB size in JPEG/JPG format
- Your signature with a maximum of 100KB size in JPEG/JPG format
- Your Date Of Birth Certificate of maximum 150KB size in PDF format
- Scanned copy of the authorized certificate to verify to you are Specially Abled if applicable.
How to Apply
CLAT application form will be made available on the official website from the prescribed date. Register using your name, parents’names, date of birth, nationality, proposed course, email ID, and mobile number. Be careful while registering as the login details cannot be altered. Log in to your account using the Registration number and password sent to the registered Email ID and mobile number. Fill in the required details. Upload the requested documents in the prescribed format. Select any three exam centers of your choice. An application fee of Rs.3500 has to be paid for candidates belonging to SC/ST categories and Rs.4000 for candidates belonging to other categories. Application fee has to be paid online through Net Banking/Credit/Debit cards or offline through Challan. Take a printout of the application form.
Exam Pattern and Exam Syllabus
(I) For Undergraduate Programs
CLAT is a two-hour exam with a maximum of 200 marks. There will be a total of 200 Multiple Choice Questions each of one mark. There will be a penalty of 0.25 marks for each of the wrong answers. The question paper will have the following sections :
- English including Comprehension: This section has a total of 40 marks and has questions to evaluate the candidate’s acquaintance with basic English grammar and Comprehension skills. This section will have questions to correct grammatically incorrect sentences and passage comprehension questions. You will be asked to fill in using the correct words.
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs: This section will have a maximum of 50 marks and has questions to evaluate the candidates’ basic acquaintance with general knowledge including static general knowledge and current issues of national and international significance.
- Elementary Mathematics: This section has a maximum of 20 marks and has questions pertaining to Elementary Mathematics learned till 10th grade. This section aims at evaluating the candidates’ numerical ability.
- Legal Aptitude: This section has a maximum of 50 marks. This section aims at evaluating the candidates’ problem-solving ability and research aptitude and at testing the candidates’ interest towards the study of law.
- Logical Reasoning: This section has a maximum of 40 marks and has questions relating to syllogisms, logical sequences, and analogies among others. Here the candidates’ ability to identify patterns, logical links and to correct illogical arguments are put to test.
(II) For Postgraduate Programs
CLAT is a two-hour exam with a maximum of 150 marks. There will be a total of 150 Multiple Choice Questions each of one mark. There will be a penalty of 0.25 marks for each of the wrong answers. The question paper will have questions from the following sections :
- Constitutional Law: This section has a total of 50 marks.
- Jurisprudence: This section has a maximum of 50 marks.
- Other Law Subjects including Contract, Torts, Criminal Law, International Law, IPR, etc.: This section has a maximum of 50 marks.
Admit Cards
Admit Cards for the successfully registered candidates can be downloaded from the official website from April third week by logging into your account. This along with other required documents and a valid photo ID had to be brought to the examination hall.
Results
Results of CLAT 2019 will be published by last week of May. Log in to your account using your email ID and password and check the results online.
Exam Cutoff
After the declaration of results, the concerned authorities will publish the cut-off.
Exam Counseling
There will be four rounds of centralized counselling for the eligible candidates selected on a merit-cum-preference basis. The candidates have to report to the allotted colleges with the essential documents and a fee of 50,000INR at the prescribed time on the allotted dates.
