 Applied Arts

Applied art deals with advertising, graphic design and related subjects. It can be defined as contemporary art which finds application in mass communication and is variously known as Visual Communication, Graphic Design or Visual Design.  There are many colleges that offer this as a specialization in their BFA programs.

Eligibility and Entrance Tests

You need to have passed your HSC like for any degree course. Colleges have their standard procedures to test your aptitude for the course, in the form of entrance tests. Most of them have a still life to do, with perspective, line etc being judged.

There will also be illustration and painting composition assignments, all to be completed in the given time of one hour each.  In Visual Art, you will be required to prepare a storyboard. There is also a clay modeling assignment. The theory paper tests your knowledge of the history of art and related matters as well as general knowledge. There are many books available for this exam preparation and videos explaining with what all material one should go for the entrance exam like drawing board, ivory paper, what sort of pencils, watercolors etc.

Entrance exam is of 2 hours for BFA and the paper consists of Objective Questions (Multiple choice questions). There will be around 100 to 200 questions in BFA Entrance Exam across 2 sections. One section has objective type questions and other sections evaluate drawing skills of the student.

The application forms are out in January itself, with applications being received till the end of March or April. The exam is held in May-June and results declared in the first week of July.

The fees for the course vary from 2 Lakhs to 6 Lakhs depending on the institute.  Some like the Delhi University have significantly lower fees than this average range.

What after BFA?

One can hope to get a sustainable and steady job after completing this degree, contrary to the belief that the career of a person who graduates in the Fine Arts is in sync with that of an artist! A graduate can join the creative department of textiles, newsprint media, advertising agencies. He or she can become an art teacher or a freelancer in art, garment designing, interior designing etc. Producing and exhibiting artwork can be quite remunerative too.
