SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern – The Selection Process

The selection process for SSC Stenographer Grade C and Grade D includes two stages. These are:

  • Stage 1: Computer Based Test (CBT)
  • Stage 2: Skill Test

As you can see, the first stage of the exam is the Computer Based Test (CBT). The CBT is a Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) type test. You would be allotted a computer at the exam venue and you would have to write the exam on that computer. If you pass this stage, then you would have to appear for the next stage, which is the Skill Test.

The second test is the skill test. You would be tested for your shorthand speed, your typewriting speed and your ability to transcribe text on a computer. This exam would only be of qualifying nature. This means that you would only have to score the qualifying marks. The final selection would be made on the marks that you get in the CBT only.

Some Important Facts about the SSC Stenographer CBT

  1. The questions for the CBT will be of MCQ type.
  2. Each question will carry 1 mark.
  3. There is a penalty for every wrong answer. 1/4th of the marks assigned to a question will be deducted for incorrect answer.
  4. There is no negative marking for questions that are not answered.
  5. The total time allotted for the CBT is 2 hours.
  6. The exam is not separately timed. This means that the three sections of the exam will not have separate time slots within which you have complete the section.
  7. Except for the English Language & Comprehension section, the questions in other sections would be available in Hindi and English.

Admissible Error Limit in Skill Test

The qualifying marks for the skill test would be decided by the SSC for every year, depending on factors like the total number of vacancies and the number of candidates. However, there is a set limit for the number of errors that are permitted in the skill test. The permissible errors are measured as a percentage of the total paragraph. The details of the permissible errors are given below:

  • UR(General): 5-7%
  • OBC: 6-8%
  • SC/ST: 7-10 %

Type of Errors in Skill Test

Errors are  classified into two types:

Full Errors in SSC Steno Skill Test:

  • An omission of a word or figure
  • Substitution of a wrong word or figure
  • Addition of a word or figure not occurring in the passage
  • Handwritten additions/corrections/insertions

Half Errors in SSC Steno Skill Test:

  • Spelling mistake
  • Using singular for plural noun and vice versa
  • Transposition of words/group of words in a sentence
  • Improper use of capital letters at the beginning of the sentence
  • Improper placement of the apostrophe in a word
  • Improper spacing between the words or in middle of a single words
  • Ambiguous over typing
  • Arbitrary and unfamiliar abbreviations.
