Details of the IES Posts

Let us now take a look at the IES Posts. As per the official notification, number of vacancies to be filled on the results of the IES 2019 main examination is expected to be roughly 581 including 34 opening for the Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) (23 vacancies for Locomotor Disability including Cerebral Paralysis, Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack casualties and Muscular Dystrophy and 11 opening for Hard of Hearing).

Eligibility for IES 2019

Like every competitive exam, UPSC ESE has also set forward eligibility criteria that candidates need to fulfil to apply for UPSC ESE 2019. Let us take a look at the different aspects of the eligibility criteria

Nationality

A candidate must be either:

  •  a citizen of India, or
  •  a subject of Nepal, or
  •  a subject of Bhutan, or
  •  a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  •  a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently setting in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. A candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment may be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

Age Limit

Next thing that we should look at is the age limit for becoming an IES Officer. The UPSC IES Age Limit is between the age of 21 years and 30 years, as on the 1st January 2019. This means that you must have been born not earlier than 2nd January 1989 and not later than 1st January 1998.

However, candidates belonging certain reserved categories are eligible for relaxation in their upper age limit. The following table gives the details:

*People with  Locomotor Disability including Cerebral Palsy, Leprosy cured, Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims & Muscular Dystrophy and Hearing Disability. You need to furnish the necessary details during the interview stage. So, be sure that you have the relevant documents when you are filling your IES Application Form.

Educational Qualification

This is perhaps the most important parameter that you need to fulfill for applying for IES UPSC.

For admission to the examination, a candidate must have –

  • obtained a degree in Engineering from a University incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956; or
  • passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or
  • obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution and under such conditions as may be recognised by the Government for the purpose from time to time, or
  • passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or
  • passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or
  • passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November, 1959

For the post of Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts) and Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’ may possess any of the above qualifications or the qualification mentioned below namely:-

For Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering. Posts) – M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

For Indian Radio Regulatory Service – M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.

IES Application Form 2019

To apply for the UPSC ESE 2019, you need to follow the following steps

STEP 1: Visit the official website of UPSC.

STEP 2: You would be redirected to the official application page. You just need to fill in the application with all the details.

STEP 3: After you have done checking the information, click on ‘submit’

STEP 4: This completes the first part of the application process. You would get a registration ID and password

STEP 5: You need to proceed to the next stage of the process. Login with your registration ID and password.

STEP 6: Upload your scanned photograph and signature. The file size should not exceed 40 KB each and must not be less than 3 KB in size for the photograph and 1 KB for the signature. The pixel size of the photograph should be 140 pixels height x 110 pixels width while the signature should be 110 pixels height x 140 pixels width. Click on submit.

STEP 8: Choose your exam centre from the list of options

STEP 9: Pay your application fee

STEP 10: After a successful transaction, you would get confirmation on your email.

Downloading the UPSC ESE Admit Card

Instructions to Download Your UPSC IES Admit Card 2019

  • Visit the official page for UPSC ESE.
  • You would be redirected to the page for downloading your UPSC ESE Admit Card 2019
  • Enter your Registration ID (RID) and  Date of Birth
  • Click on submit
  • You would get your UPSC ESE Hall Ticket
  • You need to take a printout of the UPSC ESE E-Admit Card
  • Carry the e-admit card to the exam venue.

IES Selection Procedure – An Overview

Let us take an overall view of the IES Selection Procedure. The overall selection process involves three stages:

  • STAGE 1: Preliminary Exam
  • STAGE 2: Mains Exam
  • STAGE 3: Interview

You need to qualify the Preliminary Exam to appear for the Mains exam. Similarly, you need to pass the Mains Exam to appear for the Interview. However, the total marks in all the stages would be taken into account to prepare the merit list.

Important Things to Note About the UPSC ESE Prelims Exam

  • This paper would be an MCQ Test
  • You would get 1 marks for every right answer. For every wrong answer, 0.33 marks would be deducted from your score.
  • The Paper II would be an optional paper. You would be able to choose from the following engineering streams as your subject from Paper II.
    • Civil Engineering

    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.

Important Things to Note about the UPSC ESE Mains Exam

  • Unlike the prelims, the mains would be a conventional type paper. To put it simply, you would have to write long answers.
  • The questions would be set in English and you have to answer in English only.
  • Both the papers, Paper I and Paper II, would be on the same engineering subject.
  • You would get the option of choosing from the following streams as your Engineering Subject.

The UPSC ESE Personal Interview

The personal interview is the final stage of the interview. The total marks for the interview are 200. You would be interviewed by a panel of questions that can range from current affairs, and your engineering subject to your personal hobbies and preferences. There is no fixed time for the interview.
