IES Selection Procedure – An Overview

Let us take an overall view of the IES Selection Procedure. The overall selection process involves three stages:

  • STAGE 1: Preliminary Exam
  • STAGE 2: Mains Exam
  • STAGE 3: Interview

You need to qualify the Preliminary Exam to appear for the Mains exam. Similarly, you need to pass the Mains Exam to appear for the Interview. However, the total marks in all the stages would be taken into account to prepare the merit list.

Filling Up the IES Application Form

The First Stage: UPSC IES Prelims

The first stage of the process is the Prelims. The IES Exam Date 2019 for the Prelims stage is 6th January 2019. The following table gives the details of the UPSC ESE Exam Prelims Pattern.

Important Things to Note About the UPSC ESE Prelims Exam

  • This paper would be MCQ Test
  • You would get 1 marks for every right answer. For every wrong answer, 0.33 marks would be deducted from your score.
  • The Paper II would be an optional paper. You would be able to choose from the following engineering streams as your subject from Paper II.
    • Civil Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.

The Second Stage: The UPSC IES Mains Exams

Important Things to Note about the UPSC ESE Mains Exam

  • Unlike the prelims, the mains would be a conventional type paper. To put it simply, you would have to write long answers.
  • The questions would be set in English and you have to answer in English only.
  • Both the papers, Paper I and Paper II, would be on the same engineering subject.
  • You would get the option of choosing from the following streams as your Engineering Subject.
    • Civil Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering.

The Final Stage -UPSC ESE Personal Interview

The personal interview is the final stage of the IES Selection Procedure. The total marks for the interview are 200. You would be interviewed by a panel on questions that can range from current affairs, and your engineering subject to your personal hobbies and preferences. There is no fixed time for the interview.

Getting the Result

The last thing left to do is checking the result. It is not technically a part of the IES Selection Procedure, but it is perhaps the most important to a candidate.
